An 18-year-old driver from Land O’ Lakes and one of his four teenage passengers — a 19-year-old woman from Spring Hill — were killed after he lost control of his car on U.S. 41 in Lutz just after midnight Monday, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The five Pasco County teens were in a 2011 Honda Accord heading north on U.S. 41, just south of Northwood Drive, when the man veered off the road and onto the right shoulder, where the car “collided with a ditch and then overturned,” the agency said in a news release.

The driver and one of the passengers in the back seat were ejected from the car, troopers said. The two teens were taken to local hospitals, where they later died.

Sgt. Steve Gaskins of the Highway Patrol said both teens who died were not wearing seat belts.

The other three passengers in the Accord — a 16-year-old boy and two 18-year-old men, all from Spring Hill — were wearing seat belts and suffered minor injuries, according to the Highway Patrol.

The Highway Patrol did not name any of the teenagers involved in the crash.
